In World of Warcraft’s third expansion, Cataclysm, the worgen race becomes playable for the first time.

Although experienced players will recognize them from in-game leveling missions and have some sort of notion of where they came from, it can be a bit difficult to discern their origin.

Their story seems to be short-lived, but we are actually still learning more about these werewolf-like creatures as more and more additions are added to the game. Their actual origin is still relatively unknown, but we do know quite a bit about how they came to Azeroth.

There are actually three instances of Worgen that we can see:

1. Summoned to the world through Elune’s scythe discovered by Velinde Starsong.

2. Those summoned by Arugal, those he himself created and the Wolf Cult of Grizzly Hills

3. Finally, the citizens of the recently reintroduced nation of Gilneas.

Of all the worgen, we can look at Archmage Ur’s aptly named book, “The Book of Ur”, which describes the worgen as belonging to another dimension. He describes them as a savage and bloodthirsty race, who also seem to have impressive magical powers in the form of dark magic.

In this article I will focus on Velinde Starsong’s connection to the worgen, as each story is quite long.

The worgen summoned by Velinde Starsong go back a rather long quest line that involved a lot of travel around the world. It’s not very “important” and can be easily overlooked, but those who follow it from start to finish will learn quite an interesting story.

Though the Burning Legion was defeated, remnants of their kind remain scattered throughout Kalimdor. The priestess and sentinel Velinde Starsong was in charge of leading the forces that were to eradicate this threat.

As the demons were pushed towards the limits of Felwood, it was becoming more and more difficult to control them. The night elves were falling in great numbers, and in despair Velinde prayed to the goddess Elune for help. Although it is debated whether or not Elune answered her prayers, she found a weapon that she believed to be a gift from the Goddess.

He called it the “Scythe of Elune” and discovered that it was much more than a weapon. In fact, she showed him visions of wolf-like men fighting demons. Through concentration, he discovered that he could communicate with these creatures and, from there, he could summon them to his world.

For a time, Velinde’s worgen army fought alongside her and her brothers, but as she summoned more and more into the world, they became increasingly rebellious and independent.

And so, Velinde vowed to stop summoning worgen into the world. However, even without the scythe, the worgen multiplied even after the priestess refrained from using the scythe’s power.

He later learned of Arugal’s work in summoning the worgen and set off to travel north of Silverpine to meet him. However, she didn’t quite make it. After arriving at Duskwood, something happened, though what has yet to be determined. It is speculated that she was summoned to the world of the worgen or simply died somehow.

In any case, these events took place inside a mine. The scythe was later picked up by the quest favorite “Jitters”, who activated the summoning effect and accidentally summoned more and more worgen to the mine and Duskwood.

The summoning also somehow triggered the arrival of the Dark Riders of Deadwind Pass, though not much is known about these cruel and powerful beings, what is known is how they waste many a citizen in Duskwood, including Sven Yorgen’s family. .

Somehow, Scythe will return to the nation of Gilneas and be an integral part of the Cataclysm Worgen starting area. How she got there remains to be seen.
