The story begins in the context of Varanasi (also called Kashi or Benaras) where people believe that their sins will be washed away on the banks of the holy river Ganges. Gopal, an 8-year-old boy, who comes from a middle-class Indian family, steals a piece of chocolate cake from his classmate Aarti’s lunch box and is punished by the teacher. Aarti, who comes from a kind of bureaucratic and political family, realizes that Gopal has no lunch box because his mother died when he was young, he befriends Gopal and shares his lunch with him every afternoon. They become thick friends. Raghav is a rich and brilliant student who is also a friend of Aarti. She likes Raghav for his intelligence and appreciates his hard work.

The next part of the story begins 10 years later.

The three friends are anxiously awaiting their results to get into a prestigious university, as their future depends on their results. Raghav scores well in the IIT-JEE exam and Gopal fails to pass. Aarti is inspired to become a flight attendant and just wants to complete a degree for the sake of her parents. She takes a Hotel Management course, while Raghav chooses to join the best university in Varanasi. Gopal’s father had dreamed of his son entering an IIT and though his financial situation is bad, he forces Gopal to take the exam once again even at the cost of missing a whole year. To fulfill his father’s wish, Gopal agrees to go to Kota for further training. Saddened to part with his hometown and his love Aarti, he embraces a new life in Kota, where he struggles to find the right training place and the motivation to study on his own without his friends. in a strange place. He soon realizes that he cannot be away from Aarti any longer and tries hard to keep in touch with her. Aarti, being a practical girl, has found friendship with Raghav and slowly distances herself from Gopal. Depressed by the loss of Aarti’s love, Gopal’s studies suffer and he frolics in bad company. After 6 months, Aarti comes back in her life which motivated him to get out of her with flying colors. He flares up and finishes his exams. Happily, he returns to his home in Varanasi and Aarti comes back to her life. But, this brief happiness ends too quickly to divulge the harsh truth when the exam results were announced. Gopal’s failure to get a position in an engineering college takes the life of his father. Dreaming of a secure future, his father had run into many debts and now that he was gone, Gopal did not know what to do. Gopal decided to take a part time job and join a degree course at one of the economic colleges. On his way to a job fair where all the colleges had their booths to woo students, he meets Sunil, an agent, who shows trust in him when he tells her of his sorry state. Another interesting fact is that Gopal’s father jointly owned a property with his brother who is in a land dispute pending in the courts. Gopal had suggested to his father that she sell the land worth 30 acres, but his father had an emotional attachment to his ancestors’ property. Sunil takes Gopal to a local MLA Shukla and pitches the idea of starting his own university on the ground, with the help of the capital, infrastructure and other formalities required by the MLA.

Gopal’s stars shine on him and he agrees to the deal to manage and take care of the affairs and administration of the future ‘GangaTech’ university. Meanwhile, Raghav follows his passion for journalism and spends quality time as a reporter in ‘Dainik’ newspaper along with his professional course. Aarti’s desire to become a flight attendant is still far away, but she enjoys managing hospitality. While Raghav takes care of her work, Aarti gets lonely and spends time with Gopal. Whenever Aarti is with Gopal, she forgets the whole world and somehow sighs for the hope that one day she will leave Raghav and come to him. Their secret meetings are on opposite banks of the river where the two row, away from the crowd, and as time goes by, they both become close. On one such occasion, Gopal tries to kiss her and she thwarts the scene, cutting off her friendship. Gopal then gets busy in building his college, he meets numerous types of people, runs the business, deals with the officials (bribery) and in 3 years, the college is ready. The new appointments of the faculty, Dean, etc. are in place and all arrangements have been made for the grand opening. Raghav has a very big mission and one day before the opening of the university, he publishes an article by MLA Shukla, revealing all his deals, the money from corruption, the Ganga scam he is involved in and the link to convert his black money into white through this new university. Gopal is devastated to hear this, when all the media points to Shukla. The government pressures Shukla to resign and he is sent to jail, leaving Gopal alone to handle the situation. Somehow he manages with Dean Shrivastav to get good admissions and eventually the university starts with a pretty good number in the first year. Raghav is then indirectly attacked by the MLA people and gets fired from ‘Dainik’. Gopal becomes rich, moves into a bungalow, owns a car and seems to be enjoying luxury, while Raghav lost his job, frustrated by his journalism career, his parents took him away too, and only Aarti is the moral support for he. . But Raghav’s principles and ideologies are strong enough and he vows to start a revolution targeting the youth of Varnasi. Raghav starts digging into the dark world of the ministers, collecting facts, proofs and evidences against them. He fully concentrates on bringing a strong revolution by starting his own newspaper and trying to distribute it to smaller masses along with the paper. Once again Aarti yearns for friendship and Gopal has open arms. Each one finds solace and solace by talking about everyday matters and gradually Raghav falls into oblivion. One day, Gopal comes as a guest at the hotel where Aarti works and they spend a night together. Unaware of Gopal’s advances, Raghav’s honest fight, his fight for justice and his preparation for revolution hits the pinnacle when people start supporting him. MLA Shukla hints to Gopal that he immerse himself in politics by marrying Aarti whose grandfather is well known in politics. When Aarti agrees to break up with Raghav, Gopal takes the initiative to inform her. But as fate would have chosen this very moment, Raghav’s honest fighting and integrity stand in the way. Despite his sorry state, he agrees to travel hundreds of miles to investigate the villagers’ problems and write articles for him. Gopal is deeply moved. He creates a deliberate misunderstanding between himself and Aarti, by showing that he is a womanizer. Aarti is severely injured. Gopal recommends Raghav’s name in ‘Dainik’, gets him a job and after marrying Aarti, Raghav launches into politics as a son-in-law with his ‘Revolution 2020’ ideologies. The author concludes with Aarti marrying Raghav, showing his support for the truth and that the revolution against corruption has begun.

A true mix of all the qualities combined in the current generation fusion is the highlight of this book. In my opinion, Raghav is a true radical reformer who believes in bringing about change at the grassroots level to make this world (India) a better place to live. Gopal is also an important character, no matter what comes, let’s never lose the goodness and innocence within us. MLA Shukla is the epitome of the Indian politician and his favorite line throughout the book ‘I’ll fix it’ has really struck me. He is also Gopal’s mentor. As for Shukla, it is up to the reader to perceive him as good or bad and should be encouraged or not in the society. The remaining characters also played an important role and they shine in the company of Raghav, Gopal and Aarti including the place of Varanasi which is a tourist spot.
