The Taj is situated on a raised platform at the southern end of a four-room garden. The Taj complex has been designed in a grid pattern. Starting from the north, the first composition is a red sandstone courtyard known as chowk-i iilo khana in the chronicles. Next is the 30 m high red sandstone entrance gate through which one enters the garden complex in which the main building, the Taj Mahal, is located. Through the gate you enter a four-part garden divided into quadrilaterals by canals. They meet in the center in a large tank.
The north end of this garden has the Taj Mahal. The western plank of the Taj is a red san stone mosque and the eastern flank is its replica. In the center of the platform is the Taj Mahal and each corner has a four-story marble minaret.
