In a surprising, but not unexpected, move by the New York State Legislature announced on Monday, May 24, 2010, NYRA (New York Racing Authority) received an immediate loan of $25,000,000… desperately needed operating cash to keep the current Belmont Meet going and to ensure that the industry’s most important meeting in Saratoga will have the necessary funds to pay for the bags.

This was great news and an important step by state politicians to help a struggling but key industry that is vital to New York State’s economy. NYRA operates three thoroughbred tracks: at Belmont Park…in upstate Saratoga…and at the annual winter meet at Aqueduct Race Track.

In better economic times, all three tracks, and NYRA, have not needed state help to remain open and operational. But, these are not the best times. The country and the state of New York are struggling economically. In New York State in particular, many people are out of work and have little or no discretionary income. That hurts thoroughbred racing.

When people need to cut back, they eliminate leisure activities and spend their limited resources on necessities like food, shelter, and utilities. Reduced revenue affecting all three tracks is causing some economic concern now, but it’s not the first time it’s happened. Changes in the economy always affect attendance and revenue at racetracks. Fortunately, the state legislature recognized the problem and reacted quickly…in a very positive way.

As a fan of thoroughbred racing, you can discuss events like this and other current news and stories about the industry in one of the many forums available online. It is a fact. There are numerous online horse games or online horse racing games that are easily accessible and also free.

Once you get into these virtual horse games, you’ll find that many of them are designed to satisfy your passion for the sport, including giving you the chance to “create the next races at Belmont and Saratoga and maybe predict the outcome of it.” means you may be able to participate in virtual races… also be anointed as a jockey… or trainer… compete against many other fans… and, perhaps most importantly, participate in free social communities where you can discuss the issues hot flashes of the day, such as the recent loan to NYRA described earlier in this article.
