Recent headlines indicate that the rooms embracing the new style trends in new home construction are the kitchen and bathrooms, the statement rooms in the home. Kitchens and bathrooms are becoming more upscale as people embrace a certain level of luxury in these rooms. Interestingly, new kitchen designs focus on creating a space that is as functional and efficient as possible, yet provides a very welcoming area for the homeowner and guests. Six trends that have been observed in kitchen design topics include the following:

o Design the kitchen as an entertaining space as guests naturally want to interact with the host during meal preparation.

o Design in a softer color palette and “beach” look on cabinets while adding different textures on floors and countertops for a lasting elegant look.

o Adoption of contemporary designs that combine a classic cabinet design with a modern faucet, concrete countertop, metal backsplash and fixtures.

o Introducing bold colors by using artwork, collectibles, or fabrics to balance the conservative neutral colors (think beige) that are common.

o Design in different areas within the kitchen, such as a formal and casual dining room, a prep station, a cooking station, and even a separate cleanup station.

o Combine open storage with closed cabinet storage so the kitchen can function for everyday living.

Appliances and kitchen islands obviously play an important role in the trends mentioned above, as consumers continue to demand a plethora of appliances that go beyond the outdated concept of “stove, refrigerator and dishwasher,” according to experts from the industry meeting recently in New York. Deluxe kitchens include multiple appliances including double ovens, two dishwashers, double refrigerator or freezer drawers that are only limited by space. Specialty appliances are also in demand, such as espresso machines and built-in coffeemakers, warming drawers, under-counter beverage centers, and head-to-head wine storage units. Finally, the demand for features continues with the trend to offer a wide variety of storage options to better organize busy parents and declutter their home.
